Breaking Barriers in Sport: Building Long-Term Success
In the Bojanala District and across the North West Province, sport is one of the few pathways to opportunity for young people, yet it is shaped by poverty, unemployment, and limited resources. Many young athletes face risks such as school dropout, substance abuse, injury, and mental health challenges, while grassroots clubs lack access to essential support services. Boys and young men are often discouraged from seeking help, girls and young women face gender-based violence and unequal access, and transgender and non-binary athletes experience discrimination and exclusion.
The Sports Skills Mentorship Programme addresses these gaps by connecting young athletes with experienced sports mentors and providing practical training in mental health, financial literacy, injury prevention, and life skills.
